Why do AI models give different answers to the same question?

Why do AI models give different answers to the same question? 16 to 723 words, how long six AI models answered when asked for one sentence in SmophyAI Difference Tests

They do, and our own tests show the differences in three places: the conclusion, the length and the extra claims a model adds on its own. In SmophyAI Difference Test DT-09, six leading models answered the same business question and split four to two. Asked for one sentence in other Difference Tests, the same six models wrote anywhere from 16 to 723 words. The practical answer is not to pick one model blindly, but to read several answers to your own question side by side.

How different can the answers really be?

Different enough to change a decision.

In SmophyAI Difference Test DT-09, we asked six models whether AI agents or AI search will change how small businesses get customers more in 2027. Four said AI search: Claude Opus 5.5, Gemini 3.8 Flash, GPT-6 Astra and Sonar Reasoning Pro. Two said AI agents: DeepSeek V4 Pro and Grok 4.5. Same prompt, same day, web search off, and two different strategies.

Sometimes the split is one model against the rest. In SmophyAI Difference Test DT-10, five models named inbox zero as the most overrated productivity habit, while DeepSeek V4 Pro named daily standups. If you had asked only one model, you would never know whether you got the majority view or the outlier.

Do models agree on anything?

Yes, and agreement is useful information too.

In SmophyAI Difference Test DT-03, all six models said Hold when asked whether to cut, hold or raise a subscription price after a competitor launched a similar product for less. In SmophyAI Difference Test DT-07, all six said No to moving all customer support to a chatbot on day one.

When six independently built models agree, you can act with more confidence. When they split, you have found exactly the part of the question that deserves your own judgment.

Why do answers differ in length and detail?

Length varies a lot between models, and the mode you choose matters too.

Asked for one sentence, the six models in our Difference Tests answered with anywhere from 16 to 723 words. In all seven SmophyAI Difference Tests run without a word limit, in Detailed mode, which asks for comprehensive answers, Gemini 3.8 Flash wrote the longest answer, between 375 and 723 words, while DeepSeek V4 Pro and GPT-6 Astra stayed between 16 and 35 words in all seven.

Neither style is wrong. Long answers can carry useful context, and short ones can be exactly what you need in a meeting. The point is that the same question produces very different reading experiences, and you can only choose the one that fits once you see them next to each other.

Do models add things you never asked for?

Sometimes, and that is where a second opinion matters most.

In SmophyAI Quick Test QT-07, we asked six models for a cold email subject line of at most 45 characters. All six stayed within the limit, but three of them, Claude Opus 5.5, DeepSeek V4 Pro and Grok 4.5, put a specific number promise in the subject line that the prompt never gave, such as a number of hours saved. Sent as written, that line would promise a result nobody had measured.

You would catch this by reading carefully. You catch it faster when three other models wrote the same subject line without the invented number.

How do you use the differences instead of being confused by them?

Turn the differences into a quick check on your own work.

  1. **Write the question exactly as you would send it.** Use your real wording, not a test question.
  2. **Ask several models at the same time.** Use the same prompt, in a fresh conversation, so nothing else changes.
  3. **Read the conclusions first.** Note where the models agree and where they split.
  4. **Check what each one added.** Look for numbers, promises or claims that were not in your question.
  5. **Decide where you need your own judgment.** Agreement is a signal to move on; a split is a signal to think.

What does reading several answers at once look like?

SmophyAI is an AI workspace where ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Perplexity and DeepSeek answer the same prompt side by side in one subscription.

Multi-Chat sends one prompt to all six models at once, so the check above becomes one action instead of six tabs. Best Answer then combines the strongest information from the six responses into one reply, and Smophy Mode picks the model best suited to a task when you would rather not choose. The plan costs $19.98 a month, and you can start free with your own question.

Common questions

Why does AI give different answers to the same question?

In our tests they differed in their conclusions, their length and the claims they added. In SmophyAI Difference Test DT-09, six models split four to two on the same business question.

Why do ChatGPT and Claude give different answers?

In our tests they sometimes differed in what they added. In SmophyAI Quick Test QT-07, Claude Opus 5.5 put a number promise into a cold email subject line that the prompt never gave, while GPT-6 Astra did not.

Which AI gives the right answer?

In SmophyAI Difference Test DT-10, DeepSeek V4 Pro stood alone against five models, so the useful step is to compare several answers to your own question.

How can I compare AI answers side by side?

Send the same prompt to several models and read the answers next to each other. SmophyAI Multi-Chat does this for ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Perplexity and DeepSeek in one subscription.
